Land Acknowledgement and Statement of Reconciliation

We acknowledge that the lands which constitute the present-day City of Mississauga are part of the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, The Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and The Huron-Wendat and Wyandot Nations. We recognize these peoples and their ancestors as the original inhabitants of these lands since time immemorial. The City of Mississauga is also home to many global Indigenous peoples, reflecting a diverse community with rich and varied histories. We understand that this land has a complex history that includes being a site of displacement, migration, and settlement by various peoples, including those who have been historically minoritized and oppressed through colonialism.

We recognize the enduring presence of Indigenous peoples on this land and acknowledge the historical and ongoing injustices that Indigenous and Black people face. Acknowledging this history is a critical step toward addressing its present-day impacts and committing to a future of reconciliation and justice. As a practice dedicated to healing and well-being, we commit to learning from and respecting the traditional knowledge and rights of Indigenous peoples and to actively engage in anti-racist practices that acknowledge and challenge the structural and systemic racism and discrimination that continue to impact Indigenous and Black communities. We understand this is an ongoing process and commit to continual learning, reflection, and action in our journey toward a more just and inclusive society.
